City Playhouse Theatre Restoration & Modernization – Accessibility & Facility Upgrades in Vaughan

The City Playhouse Theatre, a key cultural venue in Vaughan, was upgraded to enhance accessibility, modernize infrastructure, and maintain its role as a community hub for live performances, arts education, and cultural events, serving as a 386-seat entertainment space.

The Challenge

The theatre faced outdated infrastructure, accessibility limitations, and the need for technical enhancements to support diverse performances while ensuring minimal disruption to its active schedule of community and professional events.

Key Issues:

  • Inaccessible ticket booth and bar area for individuals with mobility challenges
  • Limited wheelchair-accessible seating and navigation pathways
  • Outdated sound and lighting systems unable to support modern productions
  • Worn interior finishes impacting aesthetic appeal and visitor experience
  • Maintaining operational continuity during renovations

Our Approach

A strategic restoration and modernization plan was implemented to improve accessibility, upgrade technical systems, and enhance the theatre’s functionality while preserving its role as a vibrant community and cultural center.

Enhancement & Repair Process

  • Accessibility Improvements: Redesigned ticket booth and bar with lower counters, angled millwork inspired by a film reel, and LED lighting for accessibility and aesthetics; introduced fully wheelchair-accessible seating and barrier-free entry points.
  • Technical System Upgrades: Installed over 7,000 watts of digitally controlled sound systems and a combination of LED and conventional lighting to support diverse events, from theatre productions to corporate functions.
  • Interior Modernization: Repaired and repainted lobby, office ceilings, and walls for a refreshed, high-quality finish; updated decor to elevate the visitor experience and align with modern standards.
  • Operational Continuity: Coordinated upgrades to minimize disruptions, ensuring the theatre remained operational for performances and educational programs like the City Playhouse Academy’s Triple-Threat workshops.

Results

A modernized City Playhouse Theatre with enhanced accessibility, state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, improved interior aesthetics, and continued support for community programs, ensuring a welcoming and versatile space for performances, education, and cultural events.
